Pool WOD with my Iman Hijab

I am a big fan of the Iman hijab. I have it in almost every colour available, and at least 4 pairs in black. I wear my Iman hijab at almost every active activity, be it running, at the gym, exploring the outdoors, and many more. One of the most frequent questions that I get for my hijab is “Can I use it for swimming?”. Before I could decide, I put my hijab to the test at Fuel Athletics last Friday when we had our WOD (Work Out of the Day) in the pool.

Never without my Iman hijab. Unfortunately, no photos were taken during the work out as it was too dark outside.

Never without my Iman hijab. Unfortunately, no photos were taken during the work out as it was too dark outside.

Swimming

We swam for less than 200m to warm up. It wasn’t complicated as I already know how to swim. Thanks to the elastic band that is built into the hijab, it stays put wonderfully on my head. As no under cap was required, the goggles can go comfortably around my head without feeling too tight.

It is not suitable for diving. The pool is not very deep, but due to the elastic band that holds the hijab in place it will result in pressure and discomfort in the ear.

I can also imagine that this hijab will also be suitable for activities that will require you to get wet, but not too vigorous, such as taking a dip by the beach.

WOD

We did thrusters and muscle up in the pool. These were very rapid and quick movement, transitioning from inside the pool to the surface of the pool. Due to the fabric around my head, it captured a lot of water and I felt that there was a lot of water rushing down my face. But it did not hinder my performance, I just could not see very well and it felt slightly uncomfortable.

Conclusion

If you are planning to go light on your wet activities, then this the right hijab for you. It is also suitable for a leisurely swim. However, if you want to go competitively in an event, or activities that require fast movement, it is better to stick to a conventional swimming cap or a head cover that is lighter and more suitable.

So ladies, I hope my honest review helps!

Until next week,

The EXPO, The Race @ Malaysia Women Marathon 2016

The Malaysia Women Marathon is an event all running girls should look forward to because it is full of awesomeness. This year, the 3-day Awesomeness (4-6th March) started with a 2-day expo at Bandar Rimbayu, followed by the race at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam.

DAY 1 : EXPO

The weather was really hot. You could sweat just sitting doing nothing.

All the vendors were ready setting up their stuffs for sale at 10am. Nashata booth offered the same discounts as available online, except for Raazgloves which were going for RM10 only at MWM!. We were lucky to have a booth next to Marathon Baker, and they were super friendly. We bought a lot of chocolate brownies from them and their drinks were very nice too.

As expected, the crowd wasn’t that many on the first day. Most who came were volunteers and MWM runners who came to pick up their race kits. Many left with many race kits in hands as they picked up race kits for group members and friends.  We received a lot of visits from our beloved customers and friends. Here’s one with Hana who came to purchase from us.

Nashata Customers are Awesome!

The organiser lined up a series of talk covering several topics on fitness and fashion shows. Nashata shared about Fashion Tips for Sports Fashionista on Friday, 5th March 2016 2pm.

Day 2 : Expo

On the second day, ie, 6th March, Datuk Marina Chin was among the honorable speakers for the Women Dialogue Session on Empowering Women Through Sports. She is indeed THE lady in sports. She was a national track queen, who later coached young athletes. She ran 100 – 400 meter hurdles and won seven gold medals at the SEA Games in the 1970s. Marathon and tracks are no different. They require running, training, strong legs, determination and good diet. Her passion in sports shines till today as she is now the Chef de Mission to 29th SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2017 under the Olympic Council of Malaysia. At the Expo, she spoke about her passion in sports and that her career in sports never fade away after winning the SEA Games as she continued to coach athletes after she pursued studies in the US. She also reminded parents to allow children to choose what they want to pursue in life and not push unrealized dreams into children.

The session was moderated by Freda Lui, the producer at BFM 89.9, also a runner. I left the session feeling blessed. I am blessed because I can exercise my rights to perform fitness activities at peace in Malaysia. In certain country, you can only train by running up and down the stairs. It is unheard off, but it happens. Stephanie Case, the founder of charity FreetoRun is an  ultra runner and she lives in Gaza. She helps girls and women in conflict-affected communities to do sports.  Now – that is passion, empowering & amazing. Hence the reason why – I will not miss sharing sessions at MWM in the future!

I was lucky to be seated next to Datuk Marina Chin at lunch. I missed the memo, busy, was called in later, came in late and Alhamdulillah – sheer luck placed me next to her. Datuk Marina is tall, motherly, gentle and BEAUTIFUL. Just look at her posing with  Dato’ Beatrice Nirmala, Mrs. Malaysia 2007, another beauty who does not age.

Staying Fit Could be the Secret to stay beautiful like Dato Beatrice Nirmala & Datuk Marina Chin

The Curves sponsored workout session right before the Dialogue Session. Despite the heat and humidity, many joined the workout at the back. The second day was indeed a busy day. We were visited by loyal customers like Roziana Harun and performing runner like Edan Shah. We enjoy having conversations with runners and customers because we learn a lot from each other. Edan is the 3rd fastest marathoner In Malaysia with timing of (2:41:43)  as ranked by the Malaysia Athletics Federation

Day 3 : The Race

I was not able to run due to dehydration and my right knee was still hurting, but the Nashata runners (Intan Suraya, Eda Fatimawati, Nur Nahsuhah, Azlina & Pacer, Efah, Aina) ran their heart out that morning. The girls registered for full marathon (42 km)  and one did half marathon (21 km). Sadly, this year, the girls are not too happy with their run. Reasons aside, one gave the idea about running 5 km fun run at the next MWM. I think it is an awesome idea. Just look at all the happy faces of the runners at the 5 km and 10 km! We should fun run then!

It is heart-warming to learn the main sponsor and associates wore Nashata for the fun run. Only at MWM, you get such support & sisterhood. My special thanks goes to Karen Loh who put her heart and soul in making MWM beyond a running event. Only this iron lady & team can pull such a dazzling run! So girls, miss not the MWM next year!

Hooda Sports Hijab – A Design Innovation for Fit Hijabists

Hooda Sports Hijab was born to solve a few problems I personally faced while performing fitness activities. I wanted a hijab that does not flip when the wind blows or when I jump. Later when I started yoga, I realized how needful the hijab would be for certain poses that require inversion and backwards-bends

Even though you hardly hear others complaining about flipping hijab, 2 years ago, I believed this was a problem that needs solving. Solving this problem was not only for myself. This is because I wanted modest ladies and hijabists to perform fitness activities without boundaries. I wanted my sisters to be able to focus on their workout and not worry about their hijab flipping and not secured.

Hooda Sports HIjab

We put a lot of thoughts into our designs so that they suit modest active women. Thanks to design innovation, hard work, and perseverance Hooda Sports Hijab was conceptualized late last year and we made a few prototypes and tested its feasibility. Alhamdulillah, with the power of collaboration, determination and Allah’s grace, the Hooda Sports Hijab made its first debut on Facebook 28th February and was made available at nashata.com on February 29.

Little did we expect the Hooda Sports Hijab would go viral immediately with more than 2,400 shares. It was sold out within a day.

Modest Activewear for International Games

Even though modest clothing is not new, many do not understand what it is. Based on a recent article on freemalaysiatoday – “A cynical suggestions for SEA GAMES 2017 sports attire for Malaysian contingent”, perhaps there is lack of understanding, creativity or design knowledge that result to such unappealing designs.

Suggested Modest SEA GAMES 2017 Attire

Suggested Modest SEA GAMES 2017 Attire shared on FreeMalaysiaToday

So here’s a list about modest wear.

  • It is not related to any religion or believe.
  • It signifies moderation and humility
  • It is not equals to hijab or robe/jubah
  • It is for all types of body shape
  • It is a choice of comfort or identity
  • It does not necessary affect performance

It Started Modestly

Modest wear for sports is not new. In fact, performance sports started modestly, and went less and less in fabric, but improved quality.

  • Olympians, be it male or female had loose outfits and more fabric on their skin back then. Over time, the fabric gets lesser and designs tighter, not due to cost constraints, but performance and practical reasons. Some changes in dress code raised eyebrows and community uproared every time they were introduced. You can read more about the evolution of sportswear at the Olympics here.

    Berlin Olympic Games, 1936

    Tennis, Berlin Olympic Games, 1936

  • Swimming suits for example was introduced less than 100 years ago in modest designs. You can read more here.
It has evolved into many designs and choices, both for performance and leisure.

Then Tight & Shrink

Today, majority sportswear designs are tight and use less fabric. There is not much of a design choice offered for performance sports.

However, with the advancement of technology in textile industry, sports fabrics are getting more and more lightweight with improvements in moisture management.  With this, there are opportunities to design modest sportswear even for performance.

At Nashata, we use different types of fabric for performance and leisure. For example, our performance range uses highly breathable fabric on modest designs. Our Zip Up jacket for example is only 220 grams, despite having to use a lot of fabric.

Offer | Accept | Respect Choices

Our customers who run full marathons and ultra runs have nothing but compliments and all smiles for being able to run for performance comfortably and modestly. We even have marathon runners who choose to wear our leisure range for performance so that they can perform prayers during runs.

Young Marathoner

Young Marathoner

We have been making women across the globe who choose to dress modestly happy to perform all sorts of sports; horse-riding, golfing, yoga, zumba, badminton and many more.

They feel good, they look good !

There are always room for improvements for modest performance activewear at international level, SEA Games 2017 or not. Nothing is impossible, especially with the advancement of technology, innovation and creativity. We are humbled to take up the challenge and make it possible tastefully, given the opportunity.

NASHATA Be Active Stay Healthy #BASH2015

This post is long due, but better late than never. We organised #BASH2015 specially for our customers and partners who have been supporting us the past year. As much as we are online based, we love meeting our customers face to face & working out together too!

The small-do was held on the 24th January 2015, at the Putrajaya Lakeclub, Presint 8. Those who came get a door gift of compression arm sleeves. At 8 am, our trainers from MARS Insanity Fitness, led by Rasid Shariff, started the morning work out with 15 minutes yoga. Why did we choose Insanity Fitness? Our partners and resellers voted for it, leaving zumba and aerobics at the bottom of the list.

After yoga, over 30 sisters from different ages and fitness level started the insanity work out intensely for 40 minutes. Insanity work out is known for its intensity and high-calorie burn-rate. Those who are used to running or zumba may not necessary be able to cope with the level of endurance required. I am sure many could testify to it, post work-out!

Nashata BASH 2015

Yoga @ Nashata BASH 2015

Some stopped in between but all completed strong that morning, The training helped to build endurance as claimed by a few sisters who were preparing for their full marathon. After the workout, we all had breakfast together with a bit of chit chat among each other.

Fashion Tips by Ida Bakar, Lead Designer

We received many invaluable feedback from those who came. We are excited with the list of WANTS; somewhat overwhelming I must say, but we will try. InsyaAllah, we will put them into the store soon. As for swimwear we have to put it on hold for the time being, although we already have a design that makes our sisters look radiant and fabulous. There are many providers in the market and we are not able to compete with them price-wise. Our products use high quality fabric and the design requires delicate workmanship. Therefore, we can only produce swimwear that is for premium market. Our focus now is to make Nashata affordable for all walks of life, without compromising quality.

We hear a few positive buzz-lines about Nashata from those who came; “Exclusive”, “Fashionable” and “Comfortable”. We are happy to hear our effort to use high quality fabric that is light-weight and moisture-wicking, and our designs that make our sisters look good, and be confident with their bodies are showing positive outcomes. Our sisters are more comfortable and more attuned to working out with Nashata.

Lastly, we had lucky draws for the lucky ones; RM100, RM150, RM200 and RM250 vouchers, redeemable online. Here are the happy faces of the winners, which include a 10 year old Nashata fan!

Dr. Shima Rashid – Keeping FIT is a strive but NOT impossible for a CAREER Mom

Dr. Shima is a surgeon who specializes in  Ear Nose Throat (ENT) and mother of 4 young children. Within less than a year, she participated in many many runs. Here’s a brief on what drives her to keep FIT!

“I had my 4th baby just after Raya last year (August 2013) and I felt like I wasn’t losing weight. I had never really taken care of myself after my first baby anyway. Seemed like life and work got in the way! Although this was my 4th C-section, it was still hard to get back into the normal routine. I was very lethargic all the time. So when my baby was about 3 months, and having never ever run before, I taught myself to run, using certain applications on the smart phone. My first official run was the Bangi Fun Run, end of last year. With the support of friends and family, I found that I actually liked running and yes the weight was starting to fall off and the rest, they say, is history!”

YAY for Dr. Shima!

Here’s some sharing about Dr. Shima and her active lifestyle.

1) On this month of Ramadhan, do you do any exercise ?

I try to do some aerobics at home, but it is minimal as there are other ibadah that take up my time.

2) How do you feel when your weight is reduced and that you have achieved your certain target?

I feel great, of course, and more importantly I have learnt that there are no ‘short cuts’ when it comes to health. It is a type of investment – you need to put in time and effort to achieve good results.

3) What is your fitness target?

To achieve a normal Body Mass Index (BMI). And to maintain it!!

LOOK HOW MANY RUNS DR. SHIMA PARTICIPATED IN LESS THAN A YEAR!

Events

4) How do you manage your time between work, family and fitness?

I usually workout after 8pm during weekdays and early mornings during weekends. The workout schedule may be ‘ruined’ due to a child’s illness, or being called to the hospital during On-Call. It is a challenge, but you do what you can.

5) Do your other family members have an active lifestyle? How old is your eldest and youngest child? Do you do any activities with them?

My husband plays futsal twice a week but he doesn’t fancy running. My eldest is 10 years old and my youngest is 11 months old. My older 2 children – Nazme who’s 10 and Effa who’s 8 – have started to want to join me in running events and so we train together during weekends. My 3rd one, Ezza who’s 4, wants to join too but she’s still has some growing up to do before she can.

gambar anak-anakIsn’t Dr. Shima awesome? Not only she has a HIGH self-discipline teaching herself to run and keeping up with it, she also shares her active lifestyle together with her children.

Dr. Shima like many other mothers, gets through her daily life by ‘doing what she can’  in taking care of the children and balancing career and health. Yes, there is no short cut. Fitness like anything else in life, requires EFFORT.

A big thanks to Dr. Shima Rashid who gives us many words of encouragement to build better products for modest women like her. She wears Nashata’s  Ultra Top, Riada Tops, Amin and Iman Hijabs and Riada Active Pants. She has got them all!
