How to Run Happy During THAT Time of the Month

Girls hardly talk about challenges while running during period openly even though they are common problems faced by many female runners. Sometimes, we would pray very hard not to get our period during running events so that we wouldn’t have to worry about what to wear, what pain would strike us while running, extra items to bring for the run and the list goes on.  All women have different problems and symptoms, and they do in a way or the other affect performance; bloating, headache, stomach cramps, heavy bleeding, hormonal imbalances and others. Whatever the challenges may be, there are ways to overcome.

The nashata runners decided to put together some best practices based on our experiences and share with our sisters.

Pre-Run

  • Plan your race
Before you register for any running event, check your menstrual cycle and see if the date falls during your period. Avoid racing on the first two days or during heavy flow. If you are comfortable to run during period, go ahead and register.
  • Consume the right food a week before the race
Balance hormones and a well nourished body help reduce pain, cramps and mood swing. Every body is unique, hence there is no food combination that fits all. However, you can enrich your body with the right nutrients to:
    1. Balance hormones
Consume food that promotes hormone balance.  So girls, avoid taking too much sugar and processed food but do ensure you consume sufficient protein.  If you suffer from headache during period, sometimes it means your estrogen level is low. Therefore, you need to eat natural food high in phytoestrogen to increase estrogen level. You can try green vegetables like broccoli and green beans,  while fruits like dates and apricots, seeds and grains like flax-seeds and sesame seeds are among the delicious high phytoestrogen food.
    2. Reduce cramps
Eat natural food that is rich in calcium & iron like spinach and chickpeas. Other natural food that contains magnesium, vitamin B6, potassium, bromelain like bananas and pineapple helps to relief cramps as well. If you like something meaty instead, add salmon into your diet. It is rich in Omega 3 and vitamin D. Lastly, add dark chocolate moderately into your diet!
Keep body hydrated, drink plenty of water.
  • Prepare Feminine Kit
Make sure these item fit in your pockets / running belt together with other items
    1. Sanitary Napkin / Tampon
We find tampons are not favorable among  runners. Perhaps many  do not feel safe with the method all together. Therefore, if you use sanitary pads, make sure you get the ones with surfaces gentle for skin and ultra thin. Look at the product description and search for the ones labelled “cottony surface” and avoid dry surface, micro-dry cover or dry net sheet. If you have sensitive skin and plan to run long hours, avoid wearing the ones with wings. This is to avoid chafing, blister or abrasion on your skin. Estimate and pack enough for your run. Wrap sanitary pads discreetly in a plastic bag before you toss into your pocket.
We found out later from other runner that period cups are also suitable for active ladies.
    2. Pain killers
Sometimes the pain can be unbearable and pain killers can help you focus on your run instead of enduring the pain. So bring along a couple of tablets with you.
    3. Ointment (if necessary)
If you know certain remedies that could reduce pain and discomfort  just bring it with you. Pack your remedy in a travel-friendly size.
    4. A few pieces of tissue paper
Just in case you don’t find any in toilets
  • Know the Route in Advance
Make sure you study the route and know the location of toilets and portable toilets. Pace, time your run and stop accordingly depending on your condition
  • Pack Clean Dry Clothes
Pack your best post-running outfits and bring to the race!
  • Yoga
Prepare your body. There are a few yoga poses that can relief cramps and period pains. You could take a few minutes of your training to perform Cobra Pose and Camel Pose that can be therapeutic for mild back pain and menstrual discomfort

Camel Pose : Relief Back Pain & Cramps

Camel Pose : Relief Back Pain & Cramps

During Race

  •  Wear suitable attire
Dark color pants would make you feel more confident. Wear pants that have pockets for you to carry feminine kit. Wear sanitary pads that are as described above or other preferred insertion methods like tampons or cups. Soft lining, non-wings (to avoid chafing), ultra thin.
  • Estrogen-Friendly Bar
Know the nutrients you need for your hormonal condition and packs them in a form of bars for the race. You can make your own or you buy from Marathon Baker. Find the ones made of dark chocolate, flax-seeds, bananas, dates, apricots and turbo-charged with protein.
  • Access Health Level
Before you start the race, listen to your body. If you are suffering from severe period pain, headache or heavy bleeding before flag-off, don’t push yourself. There will always be other runs.
  • Stop and Seek Help if in Pain
Time and pace your run and know where and when to stop to check your period (based on your flow). As much as you wanted to perform, if you feel pain while running, give yourself a break, and if paramedics are easily accessible, get help from them. You can also make use of feminine kit you have packed to relief yourself; pain killer & ointment.  When your condition improves, continue the race. Again, listen to your body all the way to finish line.
  • Focus to Finish the Race
Chin up and keep running. Focus to finish strong!

Post-Run

  • Quickly Change into Clean Outfit and Rejoice
Make yourself feel better by changing into a clean outfit immediately after your run.
  • Replenish Your Body  Immediately
Bananas and fruits are good for immediate consumption. If you are a slow runner, be prepared to reach finish line to find no food available for you. Therefore, if you are running long distance, pack some fruits (don’t carry them with you at the run).
  • Improve Preparation for your Next Run
Every body is different and what works for you may be different from others. As long as your remedy works for you, keep doing, keep improving your run during menstrual period. How to Run Happy during THAT time of the Month

Bare Faces – Authentic, Everlasting!

Bare Faces in Sports!

No make-up or bare faces trend seeped in Spring last year and the trend seems to continue among netizens. With high quality cameras on phone, filters and editing apps on mobile phones, women are more confident wearing a naked face and share with friends on social media. People nowadays prefer something natural without make-up or less make-up. This shows authenticity without having to cover up their appearance. Make-up here means those who wears a heavy total-covered make-up with mascara, eye-shadows, red hot lips, and etc. Thin layer of make-up made of mineral oil are acceptable as long as it does not block pores.

Why Make Up?

People who wears make-up tend to be afraid and have less confidence in themselves whenever they’re in public without make-up. A study shows that majority or 65% female wear makeup to attain self-esteem. In this reason, women believe that through makeup, they could gain confidence, self-assurance, self-trust, social competence and comfort in terms of interpersonal relationship.

The good news is that more and more women who embrace active lifestyles are confident with their looks. Look at these fresh faces and full of confidence. Take heed and mark in mind! Attaining confidence is not all about you look on the outside. It’s about how happy and joyful you are when engaged in any sports activity. The more confident you are bare-face, the more beautiful you will become. Just take care of your skin, groom well & stay healthy!

Embrace who you are

What do Men Say?

“It is the person, not the make up”, says Yahya Iskandar, also known as Fat Old Man Running

“Natural beauty is my preference” added All Rasid Shariff, a yoga and fitness trainer

We also asked a few other men who are in fitness and active in running about their thoughts about make up and their perception of ladies with:

  • No Make up – Natural, Relaxed, Low Maintenance
  • Make up – Formal, She takes Effort, High Maintenance
  • Too much Make up – Vain

The general senses we get from a few guys in sports is that a clean face & natural are well accepted by them. So stay authentic, groom yourself naturally, stay healthy & build your personality!

What to do?

Think twice, what attracts more is your personality not your outside looks. Nonetheless, few women likes to wear make-up during sports. But we all know wearing make-up during sports activity is not good for the skin.

Why is it not good for the skin?

  • It blocks pores causing the pores to expand wider.
  • It causes blackheads which might leads to acne.
  • You’ll get frequent breakouts.
  • Last but not least. You’ll learn to be grateful and love your natural face

The question is how do you stay confident without make-up on? Simple, you take care of your skin. Here’s how to beautify your skin naturally.

  • Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated
  • Eat lots of vitamin C enriched food
  • Get enough sleep
  • Get enough exercise every week
  • Clean your face after a good workout

#BeautifulBareFace Challenge

Your courage could be an inspiration to someone to just become naturally yourself. It could also be inspirational to those who are not confident to exercise outdoor because they are worried to work out bare face.

After all, we are all beautiful!

Nike We Run KL 2016

About a week before Nike We Run KL, I had ambitions about breaking my personal best (PB) and aimed for a sub 2:30 hour for 21km. I studied the route, I had it all planned out…until I was down with fever a few days before the big day, and the fever progressed to sore throat, cough and flu.

So I have two options:

Would I rather finish a race just for the sake of completing it since I am unable to give my best,

Or

Would I rather rest, DNS (Did Not Start, in other words, did not show up) for the race at all? 21km sounds like a rather long journey.

The night before the event, I decided to proceed with the race and finish it, even if it means I will end up walking. Besides, I will end up feeling even more miserable at home alone anyways. Thankfully, I was placed in the above 2:30 hour starting pen, so I was out of the way of Elite runners who were aiming for the podium. I could take my time completing the race.

I started off feeling pretty comfortable about my health. Maybe it was at the sight of encouraging friends, or the adrenaline rush of running in a crowd, or the ‘runners high’ that was kicking in. I continued my pace consistently until it was time for Fajr prayer break at about 5KM. The organizers were thoughtful about planning the route, because there was a masjid strategically placed at the right time. After completing my prayers, I continued running. At 10KM my lungs were slowly caving in, and the coughing and sneezing fit ensued. At this point, I was already too far into the race, in fact, I was almost half way. It’s too late to give up now, hence the run-walk-run-walk cycle begins. I ran when I felt comfortable for as long as my lungs could keep up, and walked when I couldn’t continue.

After slightly more than 3 hours later, I crossed the finishing line with a timing that I was not proud of. But I was thankful that I made it in one piece, without having to ride the ambulance. I caught my breath in a less crowded tent, quickly took a few pictures and headed straight home.

Did I regret my decision to run today? Not one bit. I guess I was just too stubborn to quit.

Sea Canoe and ATV Ride in Phuket, Thailand

I had to be in Thailand for a business trip, so I decided to take the opportunity to schedule my flight a little bit early before the meetings and conference started by spending a few days in Phuket. Phuket requires no introduction, it is a well-known international tourist destination. Escaping the crowded beaches, we opted to explore sea caves near Phang Nga Bay by canoeing.

Phang Nga bay is about 45 minutes via boat from mainland Phuket. As we rode on, the geological features of the beaches begin to change. There were many cliffs instead of long, sandy beaches, and plenty of mangrove forests. We spotted many smaller islands that were probably privately owned as it did not look uninhabited. After all, who does not want to own a small piece of paradise on earth?

We arrived at a cliff with a very small opening at it’s base. The small opening leads into a cave that will take us deeper. I’m no geology expert, however I am amazed by the rock formations and the raw beauty of the caves. Naturally carved for thousands of years through forces of Mother Nature such as erosion, landslides, and earthquakes, only God’s powers can create these unique formations and will continue to evolve through time.

IMG_3389Going into the belly of the cave underneath the cliff

IMG_3404Emerging from the cave, we spotted a lone mangrove tree. This small, muddy island underneath the tree is home to many small crabs

IMG_3466The warm, clear sea water is home to many animals, such as this jellyfish. Don’t be deceived by these harmless-looking creatures, they sting!

IMG_3491 IMG_3447Eagles trailing our boat.

IMG_3468Each canoe comes with a guide who will paddle for you, so all you need to do it just sit back and take in the view. However, I took turns paddling with my guide, just for fun.

Besides the sun, sand, and sea, Phuket is also known as a place for adventure seekers. For some adrenaline rush, we discovered an ATV site and went for a one hour drive. Our guide took us through the forest, village, and beach. There is nothing more thrilling than the rush of wind on your face and manoeuvring through some rough terrain, leaving us feeling that we wished we had booked for a longer drive. One hour simply wasn’t enough!

Phuket has a lot to offer, I wish I had more time to enjoy everything it has to offer and explore even more. But for now, it’s time to get serious and head to work!

It was a humid night and some runners were already sweaty waiting for respective flag offs at the AIAVitality Men’s Health Women’s Health (MHWH) Night Run Village, located next to the mall.I was there to run my second 21km for this year and support #NashataRunners and friends. We had #NashataRunners : Sarah, Aqila, Lyana, Intan, Nahsuhah & I for 12km and 21km. I was also looking forward to run by the sea and enjoy the night scene of the Second Penang Bridge.

HIJABI 21KM PACER – the Orange Rose

The AIAVitality MHWHNightRun is a pivotal running event for #NashataRunners as one of our runners Nur Nahsuhah was given the opportunity to be the official pacer for 2 hour 21 min, 21km category. We were thrilled and happy for her. We knew she would do great because Nahsuhah has always been a great motivator and full of positivity.  Thank you AIAVitality for giving her the opportunity to pace.  Nahsuhah was the only female pacer among 11 pacers for 21 km. Alhamdullilah, not only she paced in a timely manner, she also enjoyed it that she is happy to do more in the future.

NASHATA RUNNERS

The flag off for 21km was on time at 9 pm, and the runners were fast.  I was aiming to just finish the run since my right knee has been giving me pain everytime I train. I didn’t train for the past week and was saving the pain for the run.

Intan as usual ran effortlessly, ahead of me – slow and steady, and finished strong below 3 hours. I on the other hand, ran super slow and finished around 3 hour 18 min. It was good enough for me.
Nashata Supporter

Thank you Nashata Supporters for Running & Makan with Us!

Thanks to the well-organised run & super-cool runners – despite the heat, I enjoyed it. We ran down south and passed many factories at industrial zone. Safety was well-managed and many paramedics and ambulances were on standby throughout the route. The roads were closed and cordoned off nicely. Water stations were well managed by friendly volunteers who served us with water and isotonic drink. I wished they provided some salt water though.

The view of Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge / Second Penang Bridge last 8km of the run

It felt like an El-Nino run as it was hot and humid throughout the night run, until after 11:30 pm we got nice breeze countering us while running back to Queensbay Mall. The heat definitely tires me fast the first 8km.

The 12km run was flagged off earlier at 8:30pm. Sarah and Aqilah had so much fun at their very first 12 km run. Do expect these young girls to run more!

Talking about goodies, we were pretty joyful receiving lots of stuffs inside the bag. The items received are Lucozade Sport’s drinks, Appeton Vitamins, drinking bottle, few CLEAR shampoos, a car figurine, GRABCAR wrist rubber band, a medal and lots of vouchers. Gosh, it felt like receiving presents from Santa Claus, LOL!

Viper Arena 2016

If your idea of having fun on Saturday midnight is running an obstacle race, then Viper Arena is the right race for you. Since Viper Challenge was introduced, there have been various versions of obstacle races done by Viper, and Viper Arena was one of them. It is a shorter version of the original Viper Challenge (only 7km instead of 20km), set in a stadium (so it means no mud/water obstacles), but nevertheless still as tough and not to be messed with! Not to mention the very late flag off time, so the challenge also lies in trying to stay awake and fight the sleepiness.

IMG_3308IMG_3313We (literally) ran wild on a Saturday night!

True to it’s motto “Leave No One Behind”, most of it’s obstacles are designed to be completed as a team. The scale of the obstacle is huge, you would think it’s designed for giants. You will always need an extra pair of hands to pull you up because the obstacles are too high and you can reach up enough, or an encouraging cheer when it gets tough. All of those upper body training were starting to pay off, but I still need to work harder because I could not even complete the monkey bars.

IMG_3270“Leave No One Behind” taped onto my wrist, just in case if I need the reminder.

Processed with VSCO with a6 presetCompression arm sleeves from Nashata so my hands can move freely and maneuver easily.

However, we spent way to much time waiting for our turn at the obstacle. I lost count the number of times I yawned while wondering will it finally be my turn. In my honest opinion, the waiting time will reduced significantly if they provide several levels of difficulty for the same obstacle, or implement a penalty system just like in Spartan Race, or have timing chips, so people are pressured to complete the course faster.

IMG_3314We reached the halfway mark. This calls for a celebratory selfie inside the stadium!

One of our team members had to catch a red-eye flight, and I was getting lethargic from waiting in line for too long. So we had to split into 2 teams so some of us could take their own time and run at their own pace. Despite the short course, we completed the 7km + 15 obstacles in 3 hours as precious time was wasted with standing in line. This was one of those races that I was glad there was no timing chips!

The EXPO, The Race @ Malaysia Women Marathon 2016

The Malaysia Women Marathon is an event all running girls should look forward to because it is full of awesomeness. This year, the 3-day Awesomeness (4-6th March) started with a 2-day expo at Bandar Rimbayu, followed by the race at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam.

DAY 1 : EXPO

The weather was really hot. You could sweat just sitting doing nothing.

All the vendors were ready setting up their stuffs for sale at 10am. Nashata booth offered the same discounts as available online, except for Raazgloves which were going for RM10 only at MWM!. We were lucky to have a booth next to Marathon Baker, and they were super friendly. We bought a lot of chocolate brownies from them and their drinks were very nice too.

As expected, the crowd wasn’t that many on the first day. Most who came were volunteers and MWM runners who came to pick up their race kits. Many left with many race kits in hands as they picked up race kits for group members and friends.  We received a lot of visits from our beloved customers and friends. Here’s one with Hana who came to purchase from us.

Nashata Customers are Awesome!

The organiser lined up a series of talk covering several topics on fitness and fashion shows. Nashata shared about Fashion Tips for Sports Fashionista on Friday, 5th March 2016 2pm.

Day 2 : Expo

On the second day, ie, 6th March, Datuk Marina Chin was among the honorable speakers for the Women Dialogue Session on Empowering Women Through Sports. She is indeed THE lady in sports. She was a national track queen, who later coached young athletes. She ran 100 – 400 meter hurdles and won seven gold medals at the SEA Games in the 1970s. Marathon and tracks are no different. They require running, training, strong legs, determination and good diet. Her passion in sports shines till today as she is now the Chef de Mission to 29th SEA Games Kuala Lumpur 2017 under the Olympic Council of Malaysia. At the Expo, she spoke about her passion in sports and that her career in sports never fade away after winning the SEA Games as she continued to coach athletes after she pursued studies in the US. She also reminded parents to allow children to choose what they want to pursue in life and not push unrealized dreams into children.

The session was moderated by Freda Lui, the producer at BFM 89.9, also a runner. I left the session feeling blessed. I am blessed because I can exercise my rights to perform fitness activities at peace in Malaysia. In certain country, you can only train by running up and down the stairs. It is unheard off, but it happens. Stephanie Case, the founder of charity FreetoRun is an  ultra runner and she lives in Gaza. She helps girls and women in conflict-affected communities to do sports.  Now – that is passion, empowering & amazing. Hence the reason why – I will not miss sharing sessions at MWM in the future!

I was lucky to be seated next to Datuk Marina Chin at lunch. I missed the memo, busy, was called in later, came in late and Alhamdulillah – sheer luck placed me next to her. Datuk Marina is tall, motherly, gentle and BEAUTIFUL. Just look at her posing with  Dato’ Beatrice Nirmala, Mrs. Malaysia 2007, another beauty who does not age.

The Curves sponsored workout session right before the Dialogue Session. Despite the heat and humidity, many joined the workout at the back. The second day was indeed a busy day. We were visited by loyal customers like Roziana Harun and performing runner like Edan Shah. We enjoy having conversations with runners and customers because we learn a lot from each other. Edan is the 3rd fastest marathoner In Malaysia with timing of (2:41:43)  as ranked by the Malaysia Athletics Federation

Day 3 : The Race

I was not able to run due to dehydration and my right knee was still hurting, but the Nashata runners (Intan Suraya, Eda Fatimawati, Nur Nahsuhah, Azlina & Pacer, Efah, Aina) ran their heart out that morning. The girls registered for full marathon (42 km)  and one did half marathon (21 km). Sadly, this year, the girls are not too happy with their run. Reasons aside, one gave the idea about running 5 km fun run at the next MWM. I think it is an awesome idea. Just look at all the happy faces of the runners at the 5 km and 10 km! We should fun run then!

Happy with what you wear will make your day no matter how tired you get

It is heart-warming to learn the main sponsor and associates wore Nashata for the fun run. Only at MWM, you get such support & sisterhood. My special thanks goes to Karen Loh who put her heart and soul in making MWM beyond a running event. Only this iron lady & team can pull such a dazzling run! So girls, miss not the MWM next year!

If you want to learn about runners’ experiences at MWM, here’s a list:

Body Conditioning Class

I have always noticed that the ability to run a full marathon (or even an ultramarathon) does not always equate to being in shape. Running is a non-discriminatory sport – anyone can participate regardless of your shape and size, so sometimes non-competitive, casual runners like myself, take strength training for granted. Sculpting our bodies seem secondary, we are more focused on chasing the mileage. However, being in shape is always advantageous. It differentiates you from the rest of the crowd by preventing injury, powering up our strides so we can run faster and finish stronger, plus not to mention a balanced, leaner appearance. Even professional athletes from almost all types of sports will incorporate strength and weights into their training.

So at 7.30 am, my running group and I were bright and early at Revelation Republic, ready for some strength training class known as Body Conditioning. Since the coach knew that the room was full of experienced runners, he did not go easy on us! My LSD the following day had to be cut short, because I was very sore all over. This level of sore-ness even exceeds my previous experience at the Les Mills GRIT Strength Class! We spent more than 2 hours for a full body work out. But the focus was our legs, most importantly our thighs, hip flexors, and glutes.

DSCF8012What do runners do when they are not running? They go for body conditioning classes! (Photo credit: Mark Chin)

We did not use a lot of fancy equipment, as most of them used such as the rowing machine, kettlebells, and bicycle were commonly found in most gyms. But our instructor taught us the most effective way of using them to obtain maximum results and benefits. Even the simplest moves can be very tiring if done in several repetitions and sets, such as stepping up on boxes.

DSCF8026 DSCF8193WIP – Work out In Progress. (Photo credit: Mark Chin)

We also did explosive, anaerobic intervals as a switch from our usual aerobic running routines. We had to do 10 goblet squats and 100m sprints, as much repetitions as we could in 12 minutes. It left most of us gasping for breath at just half way!

Today’s class showed us that there are always room for improvement, even for seasoned runners. Therefore, in the pursuit of clocking in the mileage and going the distance, we must also learn how to balance our fitness routines with some weight training in the future.

UEM Charity Run 2016

I give credit to my mum for encouraging us to join this event. She found it through the internet, and announced that she would like run in the 3km Family Fun Run category with her friends and my sister. I agreed to it too. But after seeing how excited her group was about the event, I figured that she has plenty of support and company. Plus, I knew that she can run longer than 3km because she works out regularly. So I ‘upgraded’ myself to the 12km category instead.

IMG_3106Team Mama

The event was a huge turnout because it’s not everyday that one of the busiest highways in Malaysia gets blocked and closed just for a running event. Usually, the North Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) was jammed with cars and vehicles but this morning, it was full of runners. All categories and distances can safely run on the road without any traffic. Despite the high number of runners, the highway was wide with 4 lanes, so no one was knocked over and fast sprinters can easily maneuver through the crowd. There was even enough space to set up sufficient water stations, sponging stations, and portable toilets along the way.

Running instead of driving on a road that I travel through almost everyday gave me a new sense of appreciation for the route. I have never realized that the wide, open road against the backdrop of dawn was very picturesque. We just ran and ran into the first ray of sunlight. How could I have missed that despite driving through this road almost every day? Now, I agree that sometimes all we need is to slow down, look around to discover that there is beauty around us, and how perfect God’s creations are.  I have never realized the slight elevation of the highway too while driving in the comfort of my car. It was challenging, but it wasn’t a killer. We were rewarded with an equally long stretch of downhill. I just leaned my body forward, and let gravity do its work.

In the end I did not run my fastest 12km, so I did not take home a new personal best (PB) record. However, I did went home feeling grateful and energized, with a better appreciation of my surroundings.

Until next week,

The Weekend Runner.
