Coach Wawa Najwa: Healthy Lifestyle During Pregnancy

On the 2nd trimester, I was still having the nausea but I didn’t want to take it too serious and skip the feeling. Eating after vomit is pretty hard for someone who has just lost their appetite. What I’d do is I’ll drink milk for the baby to consume just to make sure I don’t leave myself and the baby hungry after an empty stomach. Alhamdulillah, I don’t have any weird cravings.

My tips, along the pregnancy I really kept myself living a healthy lifestyle, just exactly how I’ve lived before my pregnancy. It helps a lot in terms of energy level, stamina and when it comes to delivering my baby it was easy and less tiring. I avoid pickles or junk food and fast food replacing them with more vegetables and fruits. For beverages, 99% of caffeine is cut off from my diet. The intake of milk, juices, plain water and soy protein is a must. Eating outside is not my

At the edge of pregnancy, the hunger of eating seafood was inevitable, knowing that too much seafood consumed isn’t healthy for the baby. One thing I would like to stress on. I rarely eat outside as I prefer to cook myself healthy meal and this has been going on before my pregnancy.

As a coach, do you still workout?

Yes, I still teach yoga, HIIT, Boxing, and PT for my clients. I’m quite active during pregnancy, some of my students even told me my energy level isn’t like pregnant woman at all. Lol.

Pink ? October Campaign: Breast Cancer Awareness

October is here and it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month! A worldwide annual campaign that involves a lot of organisations that brings the importance of breast awareness, education and research.

This year, we are supporting Breast Cancer Foundation  efforts by donating RM10/SGD3.3/USD2.5 for every purchase in Pink you make at nashata.com during the whole month of October.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting women in Malaysia. About one in 19 women in this country are at risk, compared to one in eight in Europe and the United States.

“Did you know that early detection and getting appropriate medical attention can help save lives? So it is unfortunate in Malaysia that nearly 40% of the new cases identified each year were already in the very advanced stages of the disease.”

1. How does breast cancer occur?

Breast cancer occurs when the cells in the lobules (milk producing glands) or the ducts become abnormal and divide uncontrollably. These abnormal cells begin to invade the surrounding breast tissue and may eventually spread via blood vessels and lymphatic channels to the lymph nodes, lungs, bones, brain and liver.

2. WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Get your breasts checked at medical centers close to you! It is good to do screening two years after your last mammogram. It is recommended to do breast exam every year starting at age 40. A good time to go for the test is after your period ends. You can also bring your loved ones for breast checks too. There are many promotions for breast checks throughout the month. So take advantage of the promotions. In Malaysia, the list of promotions for mammogram and breast ultrasounds can be found at here

3. HOW CAN WE HELP?

Together, we can DonateEducate and become the Messenger of Breast Cancer Awareness.

  • Wear Pink throughout the month
  • Encourage our girl friends and family members to do breast checks
  • Contribute to Breast Cancer Organisation close to you or contribute to Breast Cancer Foundation Malaysia. When you purchase any Pink items at nashata.com, RM10/SGD3.3/USD2.5 of it will go the Breast Cancer Foundation Malaysia

Here are the items in shades of pink that you can purchase and wear.

Lastly ladies, take care of our breasts and give them more attention this month! ?

SCKLM: Suraus for Muslim Runners

Standard Chartered KL Marathon is only a few days left and we want you to go through the smoothest experience you’ve ever had. This time round we would like to help all the muslims to feel at ease performing prayers during the running period.

Here are the routes provided by the organizer:

Half Marathon Route Map

For half marathon, the suggested prayer area is located at the side road of the Lebuhraya Duta – Ulu Kelang (DUKE) when you’ve reached 11km, slightly after you pass the water station. Though there is only one surau suggested here, there are also few mosque along the road.

The first mosque you’ll pass through is the Masjid Jamek before you hit 1km running. After 14km running, you’ll meet another mosque Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan. If you can make it on time, at the end of the route, you’ll see the last mosque which is Masjid Negara.

Full Marathon Route Map

As for Full Marathon, more suraus are suggested here. The first surau you’re going to pass is at 14km running (close to Tabung Haji & water station). Then, you’ll see a surau by the road side of Jalan Ampang after 15km run. After Kompleks Sukan Datuk Keramat and LRT Jelatek you’ll find another surau located at the road side of Jalan Jelatek. At 19km run, the surau is located close to the checkpoint by the road of Jalan Setiawangsa. The last surau that is suggested for marathoner is close to the checkpoint is at the DUKE road, that is after 26km running.

Just to inform, the mosque available near the route is the same as what the half marathoner will pass: Masjid Jamek, Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan and Masjid Negara.

Few tips on prayer guidance:

  1. Don’t forget your prayers even when you’re running
  2. Jangan lupa solat walaupun bersukan berjam-jam! (in bahasa Malaysia)

Hope this helps! Share it with others so they can also schedule their prayers early before the run! 🙂

Kickboxing: The New Fitness Workout

Self-defense awareness has been widely spread globally. This is specified on women whom men look at as a very easy victim of their wrong doings. In the previous blog post, we’ve already talked on self-defense majoring in Taekwondo. Since I’ve been joining Kickboxing Class for a month, I’ll share with you my experience joining this stand-up combat sports class.

WHAT IS KICKBOXING?

Kickboxing is a type of martial arts that is based on kicking and punching. Kickboxing focuses on everything from cardio conditioning to self-defense and martial arts. Anyone who wants a perfect total body workout would enjoy this type of sports as it requires the whole body movement.

WHY KICKBOXING?

Initially, the only intention why I joined kickboxing was to just fill in my free time, meet new people, plus it’s located within walking distance from my office. The training place is called HammerFist Fight Club, Cyberjaya. As I started to watch the kickboxing lessons, I was friendly-asked by the trainer, Benny, to join the class as a free trial class. I wasn’t ready but on second thought, it’s now or never. So, I decided to join and for the first time in my life I’ve never felt like drenching in my own sweat.

With the coaches, Benny (left) and Ravshan (right)

Gearing up

Outfit wise, it’s better to wear comfortable clothing which is not to tight (so it won’t block your blood circulation) and not too loose to allow full movement in the arms and legs during training.

My fav outfit for kickboxing – Hooda Ellipse Sports, Ultra Top and Riada Active Pants

These are the gears I used when training:

Hand wrap bandage for extra protection

Bandages – Hand wraps are generally worn underneath the gloves to help support the wrist, fist and knuckles when training. It serves as an extra protection inside.

A Pro Training Glove of 16 oz

Gloves – The most essential gear during training. It protects the hands and provide some protection to the opponent against your hit force.

Shin guards – Shin guards are usually only used for training purposes. They are compulsory for amateur kickboxing bouts, but not always during professional play. I’m an amateur so I’ll be needing it.

Warming Up

Before we start the core lesson, 15 minutes warm up session is a must to loosen up the joints, increase blood circulations by increasing the heart rates and that’ll make you less prone to injury and will make your muscle easier to stretch whenever you’re striking or training. Basically, we start from head to toe; turn heads side to side and up and down, shoulder rotation, body stretching, and jogging and sprinting in circle.

Here are few clips of getting-fit workouts I’ve managed to share:

Cardio Workout – Legs toning

Battle Rope Workout – For arms, shoulder and abs toning

The Core Training

After the warm up, the best part begins; The Core Training. Here, I learn the basics of Kickboxing movement: Jab, Cross, Hook, Uppercut, Front Kick, Side Kick and more to go.

Here are some clips of training I did:

Jab and Cross Training

Jab, Cross and Side Kick Training

WHAT I GET FROM KICKBOXING

  • A lot of things gained from this training which I only thought it’s all about self-defense. I used to have a very low self-esteem which always keeps me holding back from what I want to do in life. Not anymore, kickboxing class has changed me a lot. During training, endorphins, a natural booster are released which boost up my self-esteem. Along the training, it helps me to stand tall and improves my self-confidence.
  • The ability to use different parts of the body together really improves my focus and coordination which I needed the most (especially at work).
  • It’s also a fun and faster way to burn fat. At least I get to prevent those monotonous routine of gym boredom. Kickboxing has the added benefit of including an exciting and unusual cross-training element to your normal workouts.

“It’s an incredibly efficient workout. Kickboxing alone burns about 750 calories in an hour,” says Sammie Kennedy, CEO and creator of Femme Fitale, Ontario’s newest women’s-only kickboxing and mixed martial arts program (MMA). “Add in jump rope and conditioning drills, and you could burn anywhere from 750 to 900 calories in an hour.”

  • The good thing about this training is because it’s one of the ways of releasing stress by releasing those pent up frustrations with a high-energy routine. As my concentration levels improves, it also enables me to focus on stressing less.

Not much of things to share as I am just a newbie. I hope you guys get the idea of what kickboxing is. Maybe you guys should try it too. Better try than just wondering, it could be the best sports you’ve ever engaged in. Thanks for reading! 🙂

5 Things You Need To Know If You Swap Bibs

Do you know the ramifications of changing bib ‘illegally’- that is without proper personal data changing? Ever wondered the consequences of joining sporting events using someone else’s personal data ? These are the 5 things that may occur :

1 : Next of kin uncontactable

When you get injured or faint, the medics on duty will immediately send you to a health centre for further treatment. The contact number stated on the bib will be dialled to inform family members or guardians. Imagine if the contacted person is far from the incident and came all way just to find that the one injured isn’t their relative. Well, that ignites the fire within.

2 : Organizer has no information of you at all

Almost the same situation as Scenario 1. Only the organizer will be interrogating you till you’re bummed out. That is, if you’re still alive. Don’t even mention the word DEATH. How are they going to solve this issue when not a single personal information of yours is stated on the bib?

Muslimah Runners with Bib

Muslimah Runners with Bib.

3 : Wrong medical treatment

Still the same situation but with a different fallout. What if the medics request for your medical data? For example, getting information on your blood type or allergies or diseases you’re diagnosed with. If the data stated on the bib isn’t yours, they could treat your illness with the wrong remedies. This may lead to instant death.

4 : Recognition not yours

Even if you’re running your best to the point where you’re on the brink of unconsciousness, you don’t get to receive the medal you ran so hard for, nor do you have the chance to bask in glory on the podium. The timing is also not yours but belongs to the ‘official’ racer. Wouldn’t that be a waste of your effort?

5 : Your reputation at stake

Be respectable in the sporting event as equal participants.  What would you say if you were to bump into another runner you know while wearing another person’s bib? People may perceive you as a cheater, and could ruin your reputation. Even if you were to try avoid this by not wearing a bib, the consequences are on you if you faint with no contact number for the medics to call.

So, do you still want to use someone else’s bib? If you are unable to race and would like to transfer to someone else, check with organizer or race director if possible. If it is, make sure all information is updated accordingly.

WHY NIGHT RUN?

  •  Night run offers a different running experience, be it temperature, humidity and heat level. If you want to experience a different running atmosphere, try night run as you would be running together with a group of people instead of alone
  • You can appreciate darkness and the beauty of the sky and sound of nocturnal animals while  running at night
  • Running at night keeps you away from UV rays. Over exposure to UV rays can cause skin cancer and damage your eyes. So if you plan to run for long hours and sensitive to the sun, night runs may work for you.

First Time in a Putrajaya Bike Convoy

Assalamualaikum dear readers,

I got roped into a cycling event recently and the first time was always a memorable one. It started when my housemate, K. Ruby invited me to join her on the “Konvoi Berbasikal Wanita 2017”. I wasn’t that thrilled to go to think about how packed and crowded it would be. Never was my favorite place to hangout. But then again, I just had to give myself a chance to try something new like cycling convoy. So, I agreed to join.

So, early in the morning at 6:45am we headed to Masjid Tunku Mizan to pick up borrowed bicycles. The event organiser provided bicycle and helmet rental services for participants but we found it’s quite expensive; they charged the helmet for RM50 with a shirt costing RM35. That alone was pricy, forget about the bike itself. Alhamdulillah, K.Ruby managed to borrow two bicycles from her friend and I borrowed helmets and a bike chain lock from K.Eliza, a very generous boss.

Jazakallah to the borrowers. Couldn't have done this with them.

Jazakallah to the borrowers. Couldn’t have done this with them.

At 7:15 am we cycled to Dataran Putrajaya, Presint 3, where the registration reception is to pick up our plate number. As expected, the event was flooded with estimated 11,000 people.

d69ea2d0-f86c-4e94-8c45-de608994a374

Plate number for bicycle. How cute.

We went to the starting line at 7:30am. They start with a briefing and body warm up to avoid any injuries. The briefing was given by Serina Redzuawan and some other artists were also at the event. They are Vanidah Imran, Janna Nick, Linda Onn, Siti Nurhaliza and more (sorry I can’t recall all of them). At the same time, school kids (volunteers) were actively giving breads and waters to all the participants.

Around 8:00 am, the sirens were blown and everyone excitedly started their journey.

We're like packed sardines

K.Ruby and me were like packed sardines waiting at the starting point

Along the journey, I saw a huge range of age from the children to the senior citizens, different races, different types of bicycles and more. It was amazing to see how strong these elderly are. They were old with gold youthful spirits. Moms who brought along their children were so inspiring. An active and productive family is what we should aim for. The size of their body never stop them from being active.

The facilities were well provided. Volunteers were making sure every participants get their needs and making sure everyone is safe in the right route, ambulance on stand-by in case and portable toilets available after 5 km journey.

The route track was pretty fun because of the up and down hill, making it more challenging for some. Almost every uphill, participants would get off their bike and just walk instead. The downhill was the best part. We got to free our legs off and spree down the hill.

WhatsApp Image 2017-03-11 at 11.20.42 AM (5)

When you’re exhausted, stop and take a minute to drink and rest.

Despite their courage to cycle, some of them got injured, cramped legs, fainted and I was told by my friend some even covered with blood. That’s the part I’m a bit scared of. Alhamdulillah, we weren’t injured (we did pray a lot though).

As it is our first time participating in cycling event, we did not aim for targeted time. We came just for leisure and to enjoy the journey. Thus, took us almost an hour to reach the finishing line. There, I met a lot of superwomen whom incredibly finished the journey strong.

This woman just finished her 25 km journey. How cool is that? Congratulations Yuyu!

At the end of the event, lucky draw were held but we didn’t get lucky. Plus, it was almost 12 at noon, the sun ray was really burning my skin. So, we decided to go home instead. Before we head off home, we took the opportunity to cycle under the tree shades while sightseeing around Putrajaya. A beautiful place indeed.

Skyride. Where you can have a ride on hot air balloon.

SkyRide. Where you can have a ride on hot air balloon. Lots of fun activity here.

To summarize it up, the whole event and day was a superb experience for us. A place where you’ll bump into your friends and get to meet up with awesome women. Alhamdulillah. Praise be to God who made ease in everything.

P/s: Get out of your comfort zone and have some challenging fun day. You won’t regret even a piece of memory of it  😉

Putting your Workout Pants On

Assalamualaikum sisters,

Have you ever cared about wearing the right pants for every activities you do?

Well, as most of you know, different types of pants has different purpose of use for activities. The wrong attire always gives you discomfort when you perform activity. So, here are few guidelines for you on picking the right pants.

You need to look at the design, fabric and features of the pants. For example, a good running pants should be light weight and fast drying. If you plan to work out indoor or at the gym, you can put on pants with thicker fabric. Tights and leggings are good for aerobics. Choose designs that suit your body type as well. If you have chunky legs, avoid wearing tights, and if you plan to stretch a lot, and conscious about revealing your legs, you can consider the harem pants. You can wear designs that are tight around waist area – giving the support that you need.

Check the features of the pants you plan to buy; placement of pockets, safety features, support on certain parts of body and length.
