First Time in a Putrajaya Bike Convoy

Assalamualaikum dear readers,

I got roped into a cycling event recently and the first time was always a memorable one. It started when my housemate, K. Ruby invited me to join her on the “Konvoi Berbasikal Wanita 2017”. I wasn’t that thrilled to go to think about how packed and crowded it would be. Never was my favorite place to hangout. But then again, I just had to give myself a chance to try something new like cycling convoy. So, I agreed to join.

So, early in the morning at 6:45am we headed to Masjid Tunku Mizan to pick up borrowed bicycles. The event organiser provided bicycle and helmet rental services for participants but we found it’s quite expensive; they charged the helmet for RM50 with a shirt costing RM35. That alone was pricy, forget about the bike itself. Alhamdulillah, K.Ruby managed to borrow two bicycles from her friend and I borrowed helmets and a bike chain lock from K.Eliza, a very generous boss.

Jazakallah to the borrowers. Couldn't have done this with them.

At 7:15 am we cycled to Dataran Putrajaya, Presint 3, where the registration reception is to pick up our plate number. As expected, the event was flooded with estimated 11,000 people.

Plate number for bicycle. How cute.

We went to the starting line at 7:30am. They start with a briefing and body warm up to avoid any injuries. The briefing was given by Serina Redzuawan and some other artists were also at the event. They are Vanidah Imran, Janna Nick, Linda Onn, Siti Nurhaliza and more (sorry I can’t recall all of them). At the same time, school kids (volunteers) were actively giving breads and waters to all the participants.

Around 8:00 am, the sirens were blown and everyone excitedly started their journey.

We're like packed sardines

K.Ruby and me were like packed sardines waiting at the starting point

Along the journey, I saw a huge range of age from the children to the senior citizens, different races, different types of bicycles and more. It was amazing to see how strong these elderly are. They were old with gold youthful spirits. Moms who brought along their children were so inspiring. An active and productive family is what we should aim for. The size of their body never stop them from being active.

The facilities were well provided. Volunteers were making sure every participants get their needs and making sure everyone is safe in the right route, ambulance on stand-by in case and portable toilets available after 5 km journey.

The route track was pretty fun because of the up and down hill, making it more challenging for some. Almost every uphill, participants would get off their bike and just walk instead. The downhill was the best part. We got to free our legs off and spree down the hill.

When you’re exhausted, stop and take a minute to drink and rest.

Despite their courage to cycle, some of them got injured, cramped legs, fainted and I was told by my friend some even covered with blood. That’s the part I’m a bit scared of. Alhamdulillah, we weren’t injured (we did pray a lot though).

As it is our first time participating in cycling event, we did not aim for targeted time. We came just for leisure and to enjoy the journey. Thus, took us almost an hour to reach the finishing line. There, I met a lot of superwomen whom incredibly finished the journey strong.

This woman just finished her 25 km journey. How cool is that? Congratulations Yuyu!

At the end of the event, lucky draw were held but we didn’t get lucky. Plus, it was almost 12 at noon, the sun ray was really burning my skin. So, we decided to go home instead. Before we head off home, we took the opportunity to cycle under the tree shades while sightseeing around Putrajaya. A beautiful place indeed.

Skyride. Where you can have a ride on hot air balloon.

SkyRide. Where you can have a ride on hot air balloon. Lots of fun activity here.

To summarize it up, the whole event and day was a superb experience for us. A place where you’ll bump into your friends and get to meet up with awesome women. Alhamdulillah. Praise be to God who made ease in everything.

P/s: Get out of your comfort zone and have some challenging fun day. You won’t regret even a piece of memory of it  😉

The Weekend Runner: FIT Malaysia 2015 10K

I think it’s every runner’s dream to be able to race for free with no entrance fees. After all, running events are getting more expensive these days. Well, your runner’s dream might just come true thanks to FIT Malaysia events. Held over several series in different states across Malaysia, this event features 10K and 5K running, and 30K and 10K of cycling. Yup you heard me right, a 10K race for zero payment. However, if you are not up for running, there is also martial art demonstration, obstacle challenges, and zumba at the main stage area.

IMG_1689On your marks, get set, go!

IMG_1690Fancy turning your 10K into an obstacle race instead?

As it was a free event, the number of participants were overwhelming. Parents ran with their strollers, school kids ran with their friends, or elderly couples taking a leisurely stroll. It turned out to be an interesting crowd, so everyone took the opportunity to make small talks along the way. If you ever feel like giving up, there were random people cheering for you along the way to lift your spirits. I think that FIT Malaysia focuses on one of the most important aspects of working out: interaction. People need to feel like they are a part of a community, that they have a support system. Then they are more motivated to successfully complete a run or a work out program.

IMG_1704 IMG_1714No t-shirts were given, but no problem. Running clubs or other communities proudly wore their own t-shirts instead!

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetI entered the 10K run and completed it in approx. 1 hour 12 minutes, which was a new personal record for me. Was today’s speedier than usual performance a result of wearing a brand new Mumtaz hijab? If it was, then I need to get more colours too! (Pink Rose, Oxford Blue, and Baby Blue).

IMG_1720

At the end of the day, this event made me re-discover the pure joy of running and nothing else that comes associated with it; no branded t-shirts, no goodie bags, no fancy sponsors. Sometimes all you need in running is high energy, a great crowd, and good company. The best things in life are free – and it probably is true for the case of FIT Malaysia 10K Run.

Until next week,

The Weekend Runner.

The Weekend Runner: Why should you cross-train?

Have you ever woke up one day and you just don’t feel like running, but you feel perfectly happy to cycle? Or that nagging knee pain has been bothering you for months, and your physiotherapist has advised you to replace running with swimming for the mean time until your knee heals? Or you just completed a few series of tough marathons, and you would like to take a break but still keep in shape? Sounds like you could use some cross-training activities!

So what is cross-training? Think of running as the main source of food to keep you equipped with enough nutrients. However, if you want to be in top shape, cross-training acts as an additional supplement to your main diet of running. The most popular cross-training activities among runners are swimming, cycling, hiking, and skiing (if you are lucky enough to live where there is snow).

Some people might disagree, they say that cross-training is distracting from their regular running routine, but I think otherwise because:

No-Holds-Barred Review by Lini Kazim on Nashata Compression Arm Sleeves

Lini Kazim is known in the running and cycling community for her wittiness and zealousness in sports. Youthful, stunning and young at heart, Lini is always caught smiling and jovial whenever we get to see her. We were privileged and humbled to get Lini to test one of our products. She not only tested our compression arm sleeves, but she also was the FIRST to purchase our full support compression bra. Here’s a review by Lini, in her own words.

lini kazim

The arm sleeves by Nashata that I recently tried have a very vibrant fresh pink colour, that is visible from afar. This is an additional benefit for me especially when cycling in order to draw the attention of the motorists of my presence on the road. They fit very comfortably on my mid bicep and the elastic used is fairly soft that I did not have any chafing or irritation even after a 3 hour bike ride.

I love arm sleeves for a lot of reasons but mainly:
a) they add fashion to my short sleeve shirts
b) in cold weather, I can start the run/ride with the arm sleeves on and roll down the sleeves when the body warms up
c) they help protect my skin from direct sunlight
d) for some of my Muslim running friends, they find that the choice of long sleeve running shirts are limited in Malaysia but with these sleeves, they can now opt for short sleeve shirts and complement the shirt with the arm sleeves to cover the aurat. This indirectly benefits me because they now run happy and that makes me happy!

Arm Sleeves

The arm sleeves also feature a thumb hole which I did not use as I prefer to have direct contact with my handle bar for better grip. However, I am sure it is definitely a great feature to have when running either in the cold or to ensure that there is no tan-line at the wrist area!
The fit for the arm sleeves was very comfortable and I did not at any time felt that they were too tight that it was cutting off my blood circulation!
Well done Nashata for a great product.

Thank you Lini!

She suggested a few improvements:
a) UV protection
b) More color options
c) option without the thumb hole

We certainly will take heed about her feedback.

The thumb hole is for sisters who have longer hands and prefer full covering. With the thumb hole, you can rest assured, your aurah around your wrist is covered. But yes, we can provide an option.

What about arm sleeves with prints + UV protection? Do let us know and if you want to take a quick look at the compression arm sleeves Lini tested, all you need is 30 secs of your time 🙂
