SCKLM: Suraus for Muslim Runners

Standard Chartered KL Marathon is only a few days left and we want you to go through the smoothest experience you’ve ever had. This time round we would like to help all the muslims to feel at ease performing prayers during the running period.

Here are the routes provided by the organizer:

Half Marathon Route Map

For half marathon, the suggested prayer area is located at the side road of the Lebuhraya Duta – Ulu Kelang (DUKE) when you’ve reached 11km, slightly after you pass the water station. Though there is only one surau suggested here, there are also few mosque along the road.

The first mosque you’ll pass through is the Masjid Jamek before you hit 1km running. After 14km running, you’ll meet another mosque Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan. If you can make it on time, at the end of the route, you’ll see the last mosque which is Masjid Negara.

Full Marathon Route Map

As for Full Marathon, more suraus are suggested here. The first surau you’re going to pass is at 14km running (close to Tabung Haji & water station). Then, you’ll see a surau by the road side of Jalan Ampang after 15km run. After Kompleks Sukan Datuk Keramat and LRT Jelatek you’ll find another surau located at the road side of Jalan Jelatek. At 19km run, the surau is located close to the checkpoint by the road of Jalan Setiawangsa. The last surau that is suggested for marathoner is close to the checkpoint is at the DUKE road, that is after 26km running.

Just to inform, the mosque available near the route is the same as what the half marathoner will pass: Masjid Jamek, Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan and Masjid Negara.

Few tips on prayer guidance:

  1. Don’t forget your prayers even when you’re running
  2. Jangan lupa solat walaupun bersukan berjam-jam! (in bahasa Malaysia)

Hope this helps! Share it with others so they can also schedule their prayers early before the run! 🙂

Nashata Hooda Sports Hijab was designed to help ladies in hijab to keep their chest and hair covered at all times when they yoga, jump, back-bend, run and cycle.  Released in March 2016, the Hooda Sports Hijab would stay secure when the wind blows, when you bend forward or backwards or perform any movement in the gym.

Now, we have the Hooda Racerback, specially designed for runners and cyclists. It is simplified – to give you more freedom and boost your fitness potential. It also has a hidden small pocket in the front. Watch the video to find out.

Lucozade Sport™ ‘Fuel Your Performance’ Campaign Launch

On 23rd April 2016, I was thrilled to be invited to attend the launch of Lucozade Sport’s™ ‘Fuel Your Performance’ Campaign Launch and Running Clinic.

  • What is the campaign about?

As adapted from the official news release, this event is a kickstart to a series of campaign activities designed to engage with Malaysian runners and an on-going effort to bring it’s scientifically-proven formula to Malaysians.

They also introduced their ‘Fuel Your Performance’ Advocates – exceptional individuals who have accomplished many goals in addition to the demands of work and family. These Advocates serve as inspirational role models for aspiring runners to kick-start their own dream, because they are living proof that dreams can indeed become a reality.

To learn more about ‘Fuel Your Performance’ campaign, head to www.lucozadesport.com or www.youtube.com/lucozade.

  • Why do I like this product?

In my personal opinion, it tastes great when its cold. The orange flavour is refreshing, almost like an orange juice. I felt recharged after a long run because of the electrolytes and carbohydrates were replenished. And the best part is that it’s not carbonated, so you don’t feel bloated or abdominal discomfort after drinking.

According to Mr Lee Hon Tong, Regional General Manager, Suntory Beverage & Food Malaysia, Singapore & Hong Kong, they have plans in the future to bring more flavours and products in the future. I’m excited to see to what they have in the pipeline!

IMG_3762Thumbs up to Lucozade Sport™ from us!

  • What did I learn during the running clinic?

It was more of a Q&A session with the panels, so we had a chance to learn a lot.

Some key points from Dr Mahendran Appukutty, exercise and sports nutrionist:

–      Read the label and do your research on sports drink. Not all sports drink or supplements are created the same. Thankfully, I can be assured that Lucozade Sportâ„¢ formulated based on scientific evidence.

–  For serious athletes, BMI are not applicable to them because their muscle mass is heavy. They should measure fat percentage instead.

–  To lose weight, the right amount of carbohydrate should not exceed the size of your palm. Stay away from fried foods

–  Runners should lift weights and cross-train to tone their body and build strength.

Some key points from Edan Syah, fastest marathon runner in Malaysia for 2016:

–  Serious athlete should participate in only 2 marathons per year to allow time for recovery and ensure their optimum performance

–  Take your time to train, and take care of your body for the long term. Edan Syah took 4 years of training before he qualified for Boston Marathon.

–  Not training means you are not respecting the distance

–  If you find it hard to stick to a training plan, build a running routine first until running becomes a habit. Then the training programme will follow through.

–  Malaysia should focus on training to qualify for the Olympics, as there are a lot of potential among the younger generation.

The Weekend Runner: Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2015

Lately, most parts of Peninsular Malaysia has been blanketed by haze. After giving up hope that it will rain on the day before the race, I decided that it is best not to run at all for this year’s Standard Chartered KL Marathon. As much as I would like to make my full marathon debut in this event, the Air Pollution Index (API) showed unhealthy levels of air quality, and visibility was poor. Exposure to the polluted air can lead to devastating consequences in the long term, not to mention lack of oxygen absorbed into the body, itchy eyes, and dizziness or headache. Luckily, the event organizers were on the same boat as I am, so they decided to cancel the event at the very last minute.

12074936_1020289538002021_4792959815078213638_nJust in case if you are wondering, no, this is not Instagram-filtered. The haze was THIS bad!(Picture courtesy of the organizer’s Facebook page.)

However, the organizers allowed all participants to collect their finisher t-shirts (for full marathon) and finisher medals on the day of the event. API kept worsening, but it did not dampen the runners’ spirits, as the venue was buzzing with activity. Armed with masks or face towels, everyone collected their entitlements and took plenty of pictures.

IMG_1057 At the starting line: On your marks, get set, COLLECT!

Overall, there was a hint of disappointment from the crowd. Many travelled from other states or overseas just for this event. But they accepted that this is for the best – it’s better to miss one event than not being able to run in the future because of respiratory or other health problems. As I spoke to other runners, the collection venue was slowly turning into a networking event. Everyone took the opportunity to meet runners from other groups or countries. We might speak different languages, come from different backgrounds, but our common interest have bonded us together into this international family of running.

In conclusion, everyone agreed that not running sucks, but falling sick would suck even more. Let us all hope that the weather condition improves so there will be no more event cancellation. For the mean time, minimize your outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and stay healthy. See you again next year, Standard Chartered KL Marathon!

Until next week,

Sebelum memulakan acara larian, kesemua peserta manjalankan senaman aerobik terlebih dahulu sebagai streching-up
